On Saturday 23 March, Naturalis and other organisations are organising a shell-counting-day on several Dutch beaches, including Katwijk!

On 23 March 2024, Naturalis, the Beach Working Community, The North Sea Foundation, the Dutch Malacological Society, the Green Beach, and the Anemone Foundation will take to several Dutch beaches, including Katwijk! There, they will help families, beach visitors and citizen scientists map the shells there. That will make all your beach visits more fun, and your data will help science!

During the day, there will be a live programme on beach shells in the LiveScience room at Naturalis, with lectures, activities and more. The "Main Shell Desk" will also be there, where experts will help name the most difficult species, and answer questions from the public and from the beaches. Visitors can also bring shells from home and have them identified at the museum.

Shell counting takes place between 10:00-16:00 on the beach at Nature Centre Katwijk!
